The Bombing of Pan Am 103 is a six-episode limited series based on the 1988 terrorist attack that destroyed Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. The tragedy killed all 259 people aboard the aircraft and 11 residents on the ground.
The series follows the massive investigation led by Scottish police and American authorities as they search through an enormous crime scene, examine evidence from several countries, and pursue those responsible. It also incorporates archival articles and images that help viewers understand the magnitude of the tragedy and the complexity of an investigation conducted long before today’s advanced technology.
Why I Recommend It
This is a fascinating and informative true-story drama, but I have to admit that it is slow and emotionally heavy. Even though it has only six episodes, I couldn’t binge-watch it. You need to pay close attention because the investigation involves extensive evidence, multiple agencies, and events spanning several years.
What affected me most was seeing how long it took investigators and the victims’ families to obtain answers. It also made me wonder how differently this case might have unfolded with the surveillance, forensic science, and baggage-screening technology available today.
I was especially surprised by how strongly this tragedy influenced aviation security. The bomb was concealed inside an unaccompanied suitcase—not simply a lost suitcase—and the attack contributed to stricter baggage-reconciliation and screening procedures. It gives greater meaning to the warnings we constantly hear at airports about never accepting luggage from strangers and immediately reporting unattended bags.
It is not an easy or fast-paced binge, but if you enjoy serious dramas based on real events and detailed investigations, it is definitely worth watching.
