Description (No Spoilers)
Summer ’36 is a French period mystery series set in Nice in 1936, as families arrive at the luxurious Riviera Hotel to enjoy their summer vacations. What begins as a glamorous seaside escape quickly becomes a murder investigation when one of the hotel’s guests is found dead.
Léonie has recently passed the exam to become a police assistant, but her decision to join the police is deeply personal. Her father is awaiting execution for a murder she believes he did not commit, and she hopes her new position will give her access to the information needed to prove his innocence.
Before she can officially begin working, Léonie becomes involved in the investigation at the Riviera Hotel. The victim is the same prosecutor who handled her father’s case, connecting the new murder to the mystery surrounding her father’s conviction. As the investigation continues, secrets, lies, and complicated relationships among the hotel guests begin to surface.
Why I Recommend It
*Summer ’36* is not an extraordinary or particularly shocking crime series, but it is entertaining and easy to watch. The beautiful French Riviera setting, period costumes, family secrets, and central murder mystery create enough intrigue to keep the story moving.
The ending includes a plot twist, although it was not one that completely surprised me. Still, with only six episodes and a binge time of less than six hours, this is a good option when you want a quick period mystery without committing to a long series.
* A short six-episode mystery with a binge time of less than six hours
* A visually appealing period drama combining murder, family secrets, and hidden connections
