Description (No Spoilers)

Painkiller is a drama based on real events that examines the origins and spread of the opioid crisis in the United States. Through multiple perspectives — including pharmaceutical executives, sales representatives, doctors, and affected families — the series explores how aggressive marketing and corporate greed fueled widespread addiction while warning signs were repeatedly ignored.

Starring Matthew Broderick, the show highlights the systemic failures that allowed prescription painkillers to be promoted as safe despite mounting evidence of harm. While it shares thematic ground with other series tackling the epidemic, it presents its own dramatized lens on how the crisis unfolded and how deeply it impacted communities across the country.

Why I Recommend It

It’s an entertaining and informative watch, especially if you’re interested in stories about the opioid epidemic.

While it covers important ground, Dopesick is ultimately stronger and more emotionally impactful. Still, Painkiller offers another perspective on how widespread and devastating the crisis became.

It’s engaging and worth watching:

• A dramatized look at corporate accountability and addiction
• A complementary perspective to other series exploring the opioid crisis
