Description (No Spoilers)
If you've followed My Mood Watch for any amount of time, then you already know that sci-fi is usually not my genre. In fact, I almost skipped The Boroughs completely. The only reason I gave it a chance was because one of my closest friends insisted that I would enjoy it and promised it wasn't scary.
That promise lasted about ten minutes.
Let's just say a giant spider appears early enough to make me question whether I had made a terrible decision. Thankfully, I kept watching.
The Boroughs follows a widower who moves into the retirement community his late wife had chosen before her passing. At first, he struggles to adjust to his new surroundings, but gradually he begins forming friendships with the other residents. What seems like a quiet retirement community quickly becomes something much more mysterious when an unexpected death raises questions that nobody can answer.
As the residents begin investigating what is happening around them, they discover that the community may be hiding secrets far stranger than they ever imagined.
What surprised me most is that beneath the sci-fi elements, this series is really about friendship, grief, second chances, and finding purpose later in life. The mystery unfolds at a steady pace, and the episodes move quickly enough that it becomes very easy to keep clicking "Next Episode."
Why I Recommend It
I never expected to recommend a sci-fi series, but The Boroughs won me over because the characters and mystery are stronger than the genre itself. Even if you usually avoid sci-fi, there's a good chance you'll enjoy this one.
The series comes from the executive producers of Stranger Things, and while there are definitely sci-fi elements, the show feels more like a mystery drama centered on a group of older adults trying to uncover the truth.
• From the executive producers of Stranger Things
• Mystery, drama, friendship, and unexpected twists
• Great choice for viewers who don't normally watch sci-fi
