Description (No Spoilers)

My Grandfather Charles Manson is a Hulu documentary following Sophia Maddox after a DNA connection reveals that Charles Manson was her biological grandfather. Her father, Daniel Arguelles, grew up without knowing the identity of his biological father and only discovered the connection decades later.

Sophia begins investigating Manson’s childhood, crimes, and family history while examining how the discovery affects her identity and her relationship with her father. The documentary includes personal footage, interviews with people connected to the Manson Family, and discussions about generational trauma.

Why I Recommend It

I wanted to find this documentary interesting, but the more I watched, the more frustrated I became. Instead of offering a balanced investigation, it often felt as though Sophia was searching for explanations—and sometimes excuses—for why Charles Manson became who he was.

Understanding a person’s traumatic childhood is not the same as minimizing the choices and crimes that followed. The documentary also feels overly focused on Sophia’s personal connection to a grandfather she never knew, while the experiences of those directly affected by Manson receive less attention.

To be completely transparent, I did not finish it. However, I watched enough to know that I had no interest in continuing. For me, this was a 0/10 and not a recommendation.
