Margo’s Got Money Troubles is one of those shows that sounds wild on paper, but somehow turns into a surprisingly smart, emotional, and addictive binge.
Margo is a college student studying to become a writer when her life changes completely after an unexpected pregnancy. Suddenly, she is not just trying to figure out school, her future, or her complicated family — she has a baby to provide for and money problems that keep getting worse.
What makes the series so good is how messy and original it feels. Margo comes from a very unconventional family: her mother is a former Hooters waitress who is absolutely not ready to become a grandmother, and her father is an ex-pro wrestler with serious drug issues who was not really present while she was growing up. But when Margo needs help, these complicated people become part of her strange new survival plan.
This is a comedy-drama with real heart, sharp writing, and a lot of chaos. Michelle Pfeiffer is spectacular as Margo’s mother, bringing humor, frustration, and vulnerability all at once. And Nicole Kidman’s special role in the later episodes is such a perfect surprise — she fits into this world so well.
Why I Recommend It
I recommend Margo’s Got Money Troubles because it is different, bingeable, and full of characters who are messy in the best way. It has that David E. Kelley mix of drama, humor, family dysfunction, and complicated women trying to survive impossible situations. It is funny, but it also has real emotional weight.
• A great binge if you like smart comedy-dramas with messy family dynamics.
• Michelle Pfeiffer is fantastic, and Nicole Kidman’s later appearance is a major bonus.
