The early seasons are widely considered the strongest, led by Captain Lee Rosbach, whose direct, no-nonsense leadership style became central to the show’s identity. He didn’t hesitate to fire crew members when performance fell short, and that decisiveness set the tone for some of the most memorable and iconic seasons in the Below Deck universe.

Chief Stew Kate Chastain also became one of the franchise’s most recognizable personalities. Her sharp wit, dry humor, and famously unbothered expression turned her into a breakout star. The dynamic between Kate and Captain Lee helped define the show’s early success.
